A woodland caribou (mountain ecotype) of the endangered Gaspesie herd travels through cloud cover in the Chic-Choc mountains in Gaspesie, Quebec, Canada in September 2021.
The herd, which is the last to exist south of the St. Lawrence River, saw it’s numbers drop from approximately 200 animals in 2006, to 25 in 2023, according to aerial surveys conducted in the fall.
