A minke whale surfaces in the Port of Montreal in Quebec, Canada in May 2022. Two minke whales spent several days in and around the busy freshwater port, hundreds of kilometres from their habitual range in the St. Lawrence Estuary. Although it occasionally occurs that minke whales are observed in the freshwater portion of the St. Lawrence River, it is very rare to see them as far upstream as Montreal. This event occurred two years after a humpback whale swam to Montreal for the first time.
